Beautiful scenery and a wonderful drive make Grandfather Mountain a great endpoint for a drive along the BRP from Asheville. Most of the highlights on the parkway including waterfalls, the highest point east of the Mississippi, and the incredible viaduct are between Asheville and here, so it makes a good point to leave the parkway and head back or continue. The views from here are amazing, but so are they all along the parkway. It's especially beautiful during the fall with the colorful trees.

Great place to visit and hike. Price per person is a little steep, but worth it. Great interactive CD guide as you drive up the mountain.

My wife and I spent the day at Grandfather Mountain yesterday, and it was wonderful. After paying the entrance fee ($18/person, or $16 with AAA) we began the drive up the mountain. They give you a CD to listen to as you drive which is like having a tour guide for the drive up. It describes various points of interest along the way, and gives some history about them. The views on the way up were wonderful, and we finally made it to the top of the road and ventured out to the swinging bridge. The scenery was breathtaking. After taking in the bridge we decided to hike Grandfather trail to McRae's peek. The hike was fairly strenuous, with lots of up and down over rocky terrain. My wife twisted her ankle, so her hike ended at the bottom of a series of ladders that take you the final leg to the peek. I would recommend hiking boots. Finally, the view from the peek was awesome, and worth the effort. I can't wait to return to hike the rest of the trails.

If you are an avid hiker and comfortable with cliffs and heights, take the Grandfather Mountain Trail from the parking area. It has some ladder climbs to amazing views and is considered one of the more difficult hikes in North Carolina. The rewards of this hike are endless.

Hospitality second to none. On the way up the mountain we pulled into the split rock area, to take pictures. When we tried to leave our car's starter failed. We called AAA and the front gate. The people at the front gate were willing to do whatever it took to keep our visit pleasant. They said a trail ranger would be with us shortly. They sent us Gabe Taylor: Naturalist, Interpretive Ranger and all-round great guy. He helped us determine our car problem was not the battery but was indeed the starter. AND then he stayed with us until Scott from Aldridge Auto & Diesel Repair arrived; got the car started so that we could drive to the shop to be fixed. During that wait we ask Gabe every question we could think of about Grandfather Mt, the local flora and fauna and the mountain ranges we could see. Gabe did an excellent job of educating us. This was, without a doubt, the most pleasant auto break-downs we have ever had, in one of the most beautiful places on earth. We will recommend Grandfather Mountain to everyone.
